*** THE ANIMATOR II ***
***********************
Welcome to THE ANIMATOR II, an animation program that lets you draw your
own animations from your imagination. THE ANIMATOR II is totally menu driven
and is user-friendly. You, as the user, are allowed to draw your animations,
animate them, save them, and load them back again at a later time. You are
able to draw fourteen (14) sequencial screens, each being 59 pixels by 59
pixels in size.
Equipment needed:
IBM PC-JR, PC, XT, AT or clone
CGA (320 X 200) or better graphic card
Keyboard w/ Numeric Keypad
FILES needed for execution:
ANI-II.EXE
ANI-PICS.DAT
Any files listed within ANI-PICS.DAT with a *.ani exten-
sion
ANI-II.DOC is not needed for program execution, but may be needed for in-
struction.
| How to start THE ANIMATOR II |
--------------------------------
Step:
1. Turn your computer and monitor on.
2. If you have a Hard Drive, go on to step 3. If not, place your DOS
disk in drive A:.
3. When your computer displays the drive prompt (A>, C>, etc.), move to
the directory containing THE ANIMATOR II files and make that your
current directory.
4. Type "ANIM-II.EXE" or just "ANIM-II" to enter THE ANIMATOR II.
You are now in THE ANIMATOR II. A title screen will appear.
5. Press any key to move on.
You have now entered the main screen of the program and will not leave that
screen until the program has been exited.
| How to draw in Standard mode |
--------------------------------
You are now in Standard Mode (otherwise known as DRAW mode). This is the mode
where you will do the abstract drawing part of the screens. To draw, you need
to have the NumLock key turned on, as you will be using the numeric keypad for
most operations of the program. As you will notice, there is an arrow in the
center of the drawing screen (blue border). It will act as your cursor in this
program when needed. You will use the numeric keypad to move the arrow around
the screen. As you notice, when you move the arrow, it will leave a dot on the
screen at the very tip of the arrow.
The directions of the keys are:

| How to choose different options |

Here you will learn about the menu system. In this system you can choose
one of ten different modes and any of the other fourteen functions available.
To access the menu system:
Step:
1. Press <F1>
Notice that the arrow disappears and the menu screen is displayed. The arrow
has re-appeared on the menu screen. A purple square will surround the current
mode.
2. Use the numeric keypad to move the arrow to the desired option.
3. Press "5" on the numeric keypad to choose the option.
The option will act according to its nature.
4. When finished choosing, press <ESC> to return to the standard screen.
| How the different options work |
----------------------------------
You are now about to learn how to use the different options available.
The first option (pencil) is the DRAW mode option. This option allows you to
draw abstract pictures on the drawing screen while in the default screen.
If you wish to lift the pencil (stop drawing) while moving the arrow throughout
the screen, then all you have to do is press "-" on the numeric keypad. To
restart drawing, press "+".

The second option (paintbrush) is the PAINT mode option. This option allows
you to paint any area of the drawing screen in any color while in the default
screen.
To change the default ( white) painting color, press "+". A small box will
appear on the left of the drawing screen. Use the numeric keypad to choose a
new color. Press "5" when you are done.
To change the default painting boundary (color of screen where painting stops),
press "-". A small box will appear on the right of the drawing screen. Use
the keypad to choose a new boundary color. Press "5" when you are done.
To paint the screen, move the arrow to the area in which to paint and press "*"
on the keypad.The screen will be painted according to the set color and bound-
ary.

The third option (ABC) is the TEXT mode option. This option allows you to
print characters of any color onto the screen.
To place a character on the screen, move the arrow to the approximate area for
the character to be placed. Press "+". The arrow will disappear. Type the
desired character. The chosen character will appear on the screen. Use the
keypad to move the character to the apropriate position on the drawing screen.
Press "5". The arrow will re-appear on the screen.

The fourth option (white triangle) is the PIXEL SPACE option. This option all-
ows you to specify a distance in which the arrow will jump.
To specify the length of the jump, choose this option on the menu. A panel
will appear below the menu. Use the keypad to move the marker to the desired
length on the panel. Press "5" when done. You will be returned to the menu.

The fifth option (slanted line) is the LINE mode option. This option allows
you to draw a line on the drawing screen in the chosen drawing color and line
style.
To draw a line, move the arrow to one end of the to-be line. Press "+". Move
the arrow to the other end of the to-be line and press "-". A line will be
drawn in the drawing color and in the current line style (explained below).

The sixth option (box) is the BOX mode option. This option allows you to draw
a box on the drawing screen in the chosen drawing color and line style.
To draw a box, move the arrow to one corner of the to-be box. Press "+". Move
the arrow to the opposite diagonal corner of the to-be box. Press "-". A box
will be drawn in the drawing color and line style.

The seventh option (circle) is the CIRCLE option. This option allows you to
draw a circle on the drawing screen in the chosen drawing color.
To draw a circle, move the arrow to the middle of the to-be circle. Press "+".
Move the arrow left or right and press "-" at the appropriate radius of the
circle. A circle will be drawn in the drawing color.

The eighth option (purple triangle) is the TRIANGLE option. This option allows
you to draw a triangle on the drawing screen in the chosen drawing color and
line style.
To draw a triangle, move the arrow to one corner of the to-be triangle. Press
"+". Move the arrow to another corner of the to-be triangle. Press "-". Move
the arrow to the last corner of the to-be triangle. Press "*". A triangle
will be drawn in the chosen drawing color and line style.

The ninth option (cut line) is the LINE TYPE (style) option. This option
allows you to choose one of seven different line styles.
To choose a line style, choose this option on the menu. A panel will appear
below the menu. Use the keypad to choose the desired line style. Press "5".
The panel will disappear and you will be returned to the menu.

The tenth option (half-painted box) is the SHAPE PAINT option. This option
allows you to automatically paint the inside of any box, circle, and triangle
you draw in the future.
To paint the shapes, choose this option. If a purple box appears around it,
then when you use one of the three listed shapes,it will automatically paint
the insides of it. If the purple box disappears, then no painting will take
place when the shapes are drawn.

The eleventh option (DROP) is the DROP option. This option allows you to drop
the work currently in your drawing screen into one of the fourteen storage
screens. The storage screens are used by the animator in its animations.
To drop your picture, choose this option on the menu. The menu will disappear
and a purple box will surround one of the storage boxes. Use the keypad to
move the box to the desired storage box. Press "5". The current drawing will
appear in the chosen storage box. You will return to default mode.

The twelfth option (LIFT) is the LIFT option. This option allows you to lift
the work in a storage screen into the drawing screen.
To lift a picture, choose this option from the menu. The menu will disappear
and a purple box will surround one of the storage boxes. Use the keypad to
move the box to the desired storage box. Press "5". The drawing in the chosen
storage box will appear in the drawing box. You will return to default mode.

The thirteenth option (two whole boxes) is the COPY mode option. This option
allows you to copy a part of the screen to another part of the screen.
To copy a part of the screen to another, move the arrow to one corner of the
area to be copied. Press "+". Move the arrow to the opposite corner of the
area to be copied. Press "-". Move the arrow to the area of the screen in
which you wish to place the upper-left corner of the copied picture.
Press "*".

The fourteenth option (one whole box-one cut box) is the MOVE mode option. This
option allows you to move a part of the screen to another part of the screen.
To move a part of the screen to another, move the arrow to one corner of the
area to be moved. Press "+". Move the arrow to the opposite corner of the
area to be moved. Press "-". The chosen screen area will disappear. Move the
arrow to the area of the screen in which you wish to place the upper-left
corner of the moved picture. Press "*".

The fifteenth option (two cut boxes) is the ERASE mode option. This option
allows you to erase a part of the screen.
To erase a part of the screen, move the arrow to one corner of the area to be
erased. Press "+". Move the arrow to the oppasite corner of the area of the
screen to be erased. Press "-". The chosen area of the screen will disappear.

The sixteenth option (colored box) is the DRAWING COLOR option. This option
allows you to choose one of four drawing colors.
To change the drawing color, choose this option. The color will change. Rep-
eat this option until the desired color is chosen.

The seventeenth option (BACK) is the BACKGROUND COLOR option. This option
allows you to choose one of sixteen background colors.
To change the background color, choose this option. The background color will
change. Repeat this option until the desired background color is chosen.

The eighteenth option (PAL) is the PALETTE COLOR option. This option allows
you to change all of the colors from Black, Blue, Purple, White to Black,
Green, Red, Yellow or visa-versa.
To change the palette color, choose this option. The palette color will
change.

The nineteenth option (running man) is the ANIMATOR option. This option allows
you to animate any pictures within the storage boxes.
To animate your pictures, choose this option. A panel will appear asking for
the starting box number. Use the keypad to raise/lower the number of the star-
ting storage screen in which the first picture resides. Press "5". A new
panel will appear asking for the ending box number. Use the keypad to raise/
lower the number of the ending screen in which the last picture resides. Press
"5". The screens are numbered as:

A new panel will appear asking for the number of times you wish to repeat the
sequence. Use the keypad to raise/lower the number of times you wish to repeat
the sequence. You can go as high as 5000 and as low as 0. Press "5". A new
panel will appear asking for the speed of the animation. Use the keypad to
raise/lower the number of the timer. You can go as high as 5000 and as low as
0. 0 is fastest, while 5000 is slowest. Press "5". The animation will start
according to your input.

The twentieth option (hand) is the HOLD option. This option allows you to hold
the drawing screen for the case in which you may accidentally mess up your
drawing screen.
To hold the drawing screen, choose this option. A panel will appear telling
you that the screen has been held.

The twenty-first option (OOPS) is the OOPS option. This option allows you to
revert back to the screen held by the hand (HOLD).
To revert the drawing screen, choose this option. The drawing screen will be
replaced and a panel will appear telling you that the screen has been replaced.

The twenty-second option (disk) is the files option. This option allows you to
save or load an animation from the disk.
To save or load an animation, choose this option. A panel will appear asking
which disk mode you would like. Use the keypad to choose whether you want to
save or load an animation. Press "5". If you choose "Save", a new panel will
appear asking what to save the animation as. Type in the name of the animation
with eight or less letters. Press "5". The animation will then be saved. You
will return to the default mode. If you choose "Load", a new panel will appear
asking which file to load. Use the keypad to run through a list of names.
Press "5" when the name you desire appears in the panel. The animation will
then load. You will return to the default mode.

The twenty-third option (CLER) is the CLEAR SCREEN option. This option allows
you to clear the animation screen and start a new animation.
To clear the animation screen, choose this option. A panel will appear asking
if you want to clear the screen. Use the keypad to choose yes or no. Press
"5". If you choose "Yes", then the screen will clear and you will start fresh.
If you choose "No", then you will continue on the same animation.

The twenty-fourth option (QUIT) is the QUIT option. This option allows you to
quit the program and return to DOS.
To exit THE ANIMATOR II, choose this option. A panel will appear asking if you
want to quit. Use the keypad to choose yes or no. If you choose "Yes", then
the screen will clear and you will be returned to DOS. If you choose "No",
then you will continue with THE ANIMATOR II.
